Port Authority Approves Smaller Toll Increases

By Esmé E. Deprez and Terrence Dopp, Bloomberg

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey approved a scaled-back toll increase offered by Governors Andrew Cuomo and Chris Christie that will raise bridge and tunnel fares by $4.50 over five years.

The authority board, whose members are appointed by the two governors, voted today for the plan that includes a $1.50 toll increase effective next month for cars using E-ZPass during rush hour. The original proposal, which called for a $6 increase over four years, to $14 from $8, was revised after the governors deemed it “unacceptable.”

This Shabbos is Chof Av

This Shabbos is Chof Av, the yahtzeit of the Rebbe's father, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson (1878-1944), in Alma Ata, Kazakhstan.

Rabbi Levi Yitzchak was Chief Rabbi of Yekaterinoslav (currently Dnepropetrovsk), and was arrested and exiled to Kazakhstan by the Stalinist regime as a result of his work to preserve Jewish life in the Soviet Union.

The Rebbe's personal request was for everyone to participate in a farbrengen, increase in Torah learning and davening and give additional Tzedaka on Chof Av in honor of his father.

The Rebbe said that whoever gives Tzedaka in honor of his father, Hashem will bless them "with His full, open, generous hand and many times over….. five hundred times” (Sicha Chof Av 5739).
