P'eylei Anash Pesach Letter
The Time is Now!
Dear Anash 'שיח,With Pesach just around the corner, now is the time to take advantage of the opportunity of mivtzah matzah!
At the minimum, please be sure to give a batch of shmura matzos to at least one friend, neighbor, work colleague or relative who would not otherwise buy matzos for Pesach on their own.
Pesach brochures that should be included with the matzos are available from Reb Mordechai Litzman in K’hal Tzemach Tzedek, 2 Langeries Drive.
Remember, this outreach is very rewarding simply because of Schar Mitzvah, Mitzvah, the act of the mitzvah itself draws down the Ein Sof of HaKadosh Boruch Hu into this world.
Please email your name and your mother’s name to news@monseychabad.com and it will be included in a letter that will be brought to the Ohel which will undoubtedly give Hashem and the Rebbe tremendous nachas.

Census: Orthodox, Hasidic Populations Fuel Growth in Ramapo

The large spike in the populations of Ramapo's Orthodox and Hasidic communities fueled a townwide increase of more than 16 percent, according to the latest census figures.
The increases made sense to Israel Spitzer, deputy mayor of New Square, the Hasidic village that saw its population increase by 50 percent to a total of 6,944.
"It's families expanding," Spitzer said. "We have close to about 100 weddings each year. We have a lot of births each week.
"It's a growth in the community," Spitzer said. "Teenagers are maturing and starting their own families, and we pray to God (to) bless them all with health and wealth."
Kaser, home to a large Hasidic community, saw a 42 percent increase to a total of 4,724 residents.
Ramapo had the largest population increase among Rockland's five towns between 2000 and 2010, census figures show. The town saw a 16.24 percent uptick that brought its total population to 126,595.
Ramapo now has 42,408 more people than the town with the second-largest population, Clarkstown, which saw a modest 2.56 percent increase that brought its total population to 84,187, according to the census.
Mona Montel, a modern Orthodox Jew and a longtime Ramapo resident, said the growth across the town was a positive sign.
"It is really a testament to the fact that Ramapo is a wonderful place to live and raise a family," Montel said.
She is also chairwoman of the Ramapo Democratic Committee and the town's director of purchasing.
Ramapo has been experiencing significant growth for a number of years, and the situation often has pitted residents who say more housing is needed against residents who want to halt building to preserve open space.
"To me, (the growth) proves there's room here for everyone regardless of their race, ethnicity or religion," Montel said.
"There are enough resources for everyone," she said. "Progress and growth is something that not only New York but the U.S. in general was based upon. We should welcome everyone with open arms."

Hillel Commemorates Murdered Family
By Marla Cohen, Rockland Jewish Reporter
The mood was somber in the Rockland Community College student union gathered for a service to commemorate the brutal murder of a family in Itamar, Israel.
Organized by Hillel/The Center for Jewish Life at the college, the service attracted about 45 students, community members and college employees. They sat quietly as a slide show first depicted the Fogel family in life, and then played pixilated images of the five who were brutally stabbed by what are widely believed to be Palestinian perpetrators who remain at large.
“We here in the U.S.A. and our brothers and sisters in Israel must not be scared by this,” said Miriam Hoffman, the vice president of the Hillel, who began her remarks by not only remembering the Fogel family, but also the many who died over the weekend in the wake of an earthquake and tsunami that had hit Japan.
“We must continue to support Israel. Israel represents only kindness and goodness toward its neighbors.”
The killings in Itamar took place late Friday, March 11, after attackers jumped a fence and broke into the home of Ruth and Udi Fogel, 35 and 36 respectively. They were stabbed, along with their three-month-old daughter, Hadas, and two of their sons, Elad, 3 and Yoav, 11. Their 12-year-old daughter, Tamar, discovered the bodies when she returned home from a youth group event. Two other children, age 2 and 8, were not attacked.
The attacks have prompted widespread IDF searches of nearby Arab villages and several dozen suspects have been arrested. The town of Itamar is located deep in the West Bank.
“You are all here today, so obviously this tragedy has touched you,” said Rabbi Dov Oliver, who along with his wife, Shevy, directs the Hillel. One student read Psalm 23 in Hebrew and Oliver recited “El Maleh Rachamim,” the yizkor, or memorial prayer for the Fogels. He also encouraged students to give tzedakah to help support the surviving Fogel children.
Students handed out strips of paper that read, “In honor and in memory of the Fogel family who can no longer observe Torah and mitzvos and can no longer do deeds for goodness and kindness, I hereby resolve to:” Oliver asked that students fill in the blank with an act that would better themselves, “Whether you will make an effort to get along with your family better, study Torah, go to shul or give up smoking, do something good.”
Daniel Sonnenschein, the shaliach, or Israel emissary, from JCC Rockland spoke briefly saying that he had resisted looking at the gruesome pictures of the slain family until now.
“It is the month of Adar, and we are commanded to be happy,” he said. Adar is the month in which Purim, a loud, spirited holiday takes place. “It’s been very challenging with these events.”
He spoke of how the entire country of Israel had recently come to a halt to remember Gilad Shalit, the soldier kidnapped nearly five years ago by Hamas, and who is believed to be held in a prison someplace in Gaza. He thanked Hillel for holding the memorial program, and then on guitar, accompanied by another student, sang “Oseh Shalom,” which comes from the Hebrew liturgy asking God to bring peace.
After, students lit candles that had been set up as memorial lights for the family. The service, while hastily planned, was something that just needed to be done, according to Hillel President Megan Tabok, 20, of Nanuet.
“On Sunday we came back from Sabbath in New Paltz, and learned of this, and as board members we just had to do something,” she said. “We wanted this to be noticed by people.”

Center for Jewish Life Purim Parties
Over Purim, two parties were run by the Olivers, directors of Hillel of Rockland. The first one on Purim night was held at Cousins Pool Hall where the megillah was read by Eliezer Drew. The party attracted over one hundred Jewish youth from the area. The majority were either current or past RCC students but many were also other Jews in the area most of whom would not have heard the megillah or celebrated Purim otherwise. The party went on until almost 2:00 AM with dancing and costume contest awards and included a great menu of sushi, pizza, pastas, falafel and the like.
On Purim day a second party was thrown for a slightly older crowd in their mid-twenties in Crown Heights. It was mostly Birthright alumni from Rockland and surrounding areas but all of whom rely on these events for their connection to Yiddishkeit.

Rabbi Saloff Launches Blog

What are Yichudim (Unifications)?
It is our job to join heaven and earth, spiritual and physical, refined and coarse, etc. infusing the “higher” into the “lower”.
The ways in which we do this… through our actions, thought and deeds… are yichudim.
This will be a forum for those who contemplate and implement the drawing of G-dliness into the physical world to discuss, teach and learn the ways of “unification”.

Adar Beis at Cheder Chabad Girls
In honor of Chodesh Adar Cheder Chabad Girls held a talent show. The students were invited to perform any talent of their choice for the school. From gymnastics to musical instruments to dance and artwork the girls astounded the audience with their confidence, poise, creativity, and of course, talent. Yasher koach to all that participated.
Adar Beis at Cheder Chabad Boys
This past Sunday the boys at Cheder Chabad had their monthly Sunday program organized by the PTA in honor of Adar Beis.
The program consisted of two parts, a talent show and a program centered on making and learning about graggers.
For the talent show, the first that included the whole school, boys from Kitah Aleph through Ches were invited to show off their talents by either singing, playing an instrument or doing some other skill. Boys came up onto the stage and sang in groups or alone, told jokes and some even gave a small puppet show. The talents also included juggling and riding a unicycle! Yasher Koach to all! The boys impressed their school mates with their wonderful talents and Rabbi Silverstein did a great job as compeer (master of ceremonies).
After hearing how evil Amalyk is still a force to be reckoned with today, the boys were encouraged to fight the Hamans of the world, both within and without, leilui nismas the members of the Fogel family who were the victims of the terrible terrorist attack in Itamar this past Shabbos. The boys were asked to write up on boards what are their own strategies for dealing with the inner and outer Hamans of the world are and to think of eradicating these negative middos and qualities when they would sound their own graggers on Purim. The boys then made their own graggers out of wood. The younger grades used using glue guns to make the graggers and markers to decorate them while the older boys also used glue guns but wood burners to decorate theirs. All the boys received a fact sheet on the gragger and its spiritual and historical significance.
Thank you to all the parents who were involved, particularly Mrs, Michal Silverstein, Mrs, Rochel Leah Ash and Mrs, Bracha Meshchaninov who were involved in planning the event. A big thank you to the parents who came to assist: Mrs. Tamar Dickel, Mrs. Rashi Kaplan and Mr. Izak Cohen. Your help was invaluable! A special thank you to Rabbi Wolowik for his part in helping with the Talent Show!
