Local Students Return from Israel Trip

This past week students from RCC and other young adults from the Rockland area returned from a Taglit-Birthright Israel trip led by Rabbi Dov Oliver and Shloimie Baitz. The trip was a big success with ten magical days in ארצנו הקדושה not only bringing the participants to a love of the land, but even more so a newfound appreciation for their Yiddishkeit and a commitment to grow and stay connected.

Some of the highlights of the trip were an incredible Friday night davening at the Kosel, a day spent in Tzfas and a special Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebration for eleven of the students who had never officially marked the occasion. Popular singer, Chaim Dovid held a mini concert in honor of the simchas on his rooftop overlooking the Old City directly above the Har Habayis. All the celebrants worked hard to prepare speeches with Divrei Torah from what would have been the Parsha of their Bar/Bas Mitzvah and took on various resolutions such as lighting Shabbos candles, starting to put on Tefillin once a week, stopping to eat certain non-kosher foods and many others.

The accompanying pictures also show Rabbi Oliver at a wedding which he attended one night of the trip. The wedding was of two past RCC students, one who was not Jewish when she met the Olivers and has since completed a full Halachic conversion and her husband who was then not yet frum.

Registration for the next Birthright trip is coming up soon. If you know of someone who is appropriate for the trip please email

Women's Chof Beis Shvat Farbrengen in Crown Heights

Monsey Beis Chaya Mushka Celebrates Third Dinner

Parents, supporters, friends and members of the greater Monsey community gathered Sunday night for the third annual Monsey Beis Chaya Mushka (MBCM) High School for Girls dinner.

The dinner was held right before Chof Beis Shvat, the yahrzeit of the Rebbetzin for whom the school is named, in the elegant ballroom of the Regency Banquet and Conference Center in Nanuet where the many in attendance enjoyed a fine wine and cheese smorgasbord and sumptuous dairy dinner.

The evening began with the recitation of Tehillim.

Rabbi Yossi Touger, who coordinated the dinner, then introduced the president of MBCM, Yisroel Schulman, Esq., who gave opening remarks.

Following his remarks, Mr. Schulman introduced Dr. Yehudah and Mrs. Karen Schild who were presented with the Amud HaChesed award. Dr. Schild spoke beautifully, and with lots of humor, about his wife, Karen’s, tremendous commitment to the community through her selfless running of Shifra and Puah, and how much they appreciate the unique education Monsey Beis Chaya Mushka provides to their twin daughters.

Rabbi Dr. Chaim Dovid Kagan, founder and dean of MBCM, then presented the Parents of the Year award to Dr. Chaim and Mrs. Tovah Schild (no relation to the above Schilds). Dr. Schild gave a moving dvar Torah and expressed deep appreciation to the faculty and administration of Monsey Beis Chaya Mushka for providing a warm and Chassidishe chinuch for their daughters.

The keynote was delivered by Dr. David Lazerson, the renowned educator known as Dr. Laz, who gave an entertaining talk full of humorous stories of his teaching experiences. Following benching, Dr. Laz pulled out his guitar and farbrenged with the crowd.

Everybody left the dinner with a gift, a silver plate and wood MBCM pushka.

Monsey Beis Chaya Mushka High School for Girls opened in September of 2006 and has grown to almost 60 students, including approximately 30 from Monsey, 15 from New Jersey, Connecticut and other areas around New York and 12 students from around the United States and world. Rabbi Lesches Visits Cheder Menachem in LA

On Monday, 19 Shevat, Cheder Menachem in Los Angeles was visited by Rabbi Boruch Lesches, Rav of the Lubavitcher Kehilah in Monsey.

Rabbi Lesches toured the Cheder, and visited a number of classes, testing the students in their learning and gave Divrei brocho Ve'idud, encouraging the Talmidim in their learning and growing in Chassidishkeit.

Utilizing the opportunity, four students who are preparing to be tested on a seder of Mishnayos Baal Peh, were each tested by the visiting Rav.

Rabbi Lesches was very impressed with the learning and wished the boys continued success in their studies.

School District Seeks to Incorporate Private School

According to the Journal News, the East Ramapo School District is seeking to incorporate a private special-education school for 70 Yiddish and Hebrew speaking students, Rockland Institute for Special Education (RISE), into the public school system.

District administrators contend that absorbing the school, which is run by Yeshiva Ohr V'Daas, will reduce the number of special-education students attending classes outside the district by bringing each RISE child into the public school system.

The superintendent has said incorporating the school and reducing out-of-district tuition costs would alleviate at least one situation cited by a state Education Department Quality Assurance Report released in August, the district's tendency in recent years to improperly place special-needs students outside of the school district.

Nathan Rothschild, president of the school board, described the RISE plan as a pet project on which he has worked extensively. He said that the takeover of the school, which is in financial straits to the tune of $3 million, is supported by the state Education Department and that he believes it should be supported by the board.

"We're talking about special children who need an education — children who need an education with tender, loving care — and that is something our entire board is sensitive to," he said. "This is something that is really going to make a difference in so many people's lives."

We turn to you now to please help us with a pledge above and beyond what you already do for us. It’s never easy, but we ask you to search in your hearts for a place which will allow you to pledge these much needed monies.

To be eligible for the Matching Funds Incentive, all pledges must be made before this Shabbos, Parshas Mishpatim.

The Science of Tu B'Shvat at Cheder Boys

This past Sunday, the PTA of Cheder Chabad Boys sponsored a Science Day which turned the boys into mini scientists as they conducted hands on activities and learned about the seven minim at seven different stations – one for each min!

Their activities included:
  • Watching a video of how flour was made and then crushed and sifted wheat kernels.
  • Seeing how barley turns into beer and watched yeast blow up a balloon.
  • Learning what chromatography was about and used pomegranate dye (both yellow and red) to tie-dye t shirts.
  • The older children looked at leaves through microscopes while the younger children looked at figs through magnifying glasses to look for bugs and count seeds.
  • Tasting date honey and bee honey and chose which they liked better.
  • And finally, they made lava lamps... whew!
The boys were given individual manila folders to keep their handouts just like the scientists they were!

They went smoothly from station to station, led by their Rebbis, and came to a station that was run by wonderful parent volunteers – Mrs. Bassi Friedman, Mrs. Rashi Kaplan, Mrs. Tamar Dickel, Mrs. Rosie Lehrer, Mrs. Chanie Cohen, Mrs. Rochel Hirsch, Mrs. Miriam Kagan, Mrs. Alicia Atlman, Mr. Chaim Bloch, Mr. Uriel Ashand Mr. Yosef Levine.

Mrs. Michal Silverstein and Mrs. Rochel Leah Ash planned and coordinated the event, and everyone combined to make it a wonderful learning experience for all! Special thanks to Rabbi Wolowik for his help and support and the boys school secretary Miss S. Steinberger.

Achdus Torah for R' Shalom Mordechai Rubashkin

Dear Friends,

A Sefer Torah is currently being written in Yerushalayim Ir HaKodesh in the merit of our father, R' Sholom Mordechai HaLevi ben Rivkah.

His ordeal has put the beautiful and eternal unity of the Jewish people on display in all its glory. Our holy Torah is the embodiment of that unity - every single letter is an integral part of the Torah, and without it the entire Torah is invalid.

We therefore feel that it is fitting and a great Zchus, for him and for all of us, to make this another opportunity for Achdus. We would like to ask every Jew to join in the writing of this Torah with a symbolic participation of $1.

We have created an online form at, where payment can be made by credit card. Names and mother's names can optionally be sent in there as well.

Participation by check (payable to the Sofer, 'HaSofer') can be sent to:

Achdus Torah
53 Olympia Lane
Monsey, NY 10952

To make a tax-deductible donation, inquire about dedication opportunities or if you have any other questions, email us at

With gratitude and trust in Hashem,

The Rubashkin Family

Rosh Chodesh Shvat at Cheder Chabad Girls & Preschool

In חודש שבט, we at the Cheder Girls school the buckled our seatbelts and were on our way.

“Where to?”, everyone wondered!

Well, these were the clues. First we made everyone’s eyes look oriental. Then the older grades were given Sudoku puzzles. Chaya Liberow and Sarah’le Simon were the first to figure it out. Lastly and most excitingly we made candy sushi. Yes, you guessed.

Off to Japan we are traveling!

In Japan learning is taken very seriously and they work very hard to achieve their goals. In חודש שבט the חודש that the Rebbe accepted the נשיאות, he began teaching us the חסידים so much and continued throughout the years. We must try our best to learn the רבי'ס שיחות and of course internalize them. We also must work very hard to reach the goal of bringing משיח now!

Cheder Preschool Learns Fire Safety

Thanks to the dedicated volunteers of the Spring Valley Fire Department for coming to Cheder Chabad to speak to the preschool classes about fire safety!

Each child got a a gift package containing a fire safety coloring book with crayons and a badge.
