Chof Av Farbrengen

There will be a special farbrengen at Tzemach Tzedek in honor of Chov Av this Shabbos, Parshas Eikev, following davening.

If you are interested in co-sponsoring this Kiddush, please contact Avraham Hayman at avrahamhayman@gmail.com.

Chof Av is the Yarzeit of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson (1878-1944), the father of the Rebbe. Rav Levi Yitzchak served as the Chief Rabbi of Yekaterinoslav (currently Dnepropetrovsk), and was arrested and exiled to Kazakhstan by the Stalinist regime as a result of his work to preserve Jewish life in the Soviet Union.

The Rebbe made a personal request that everyone participate in a farbrengen, increase in Torah learning and davening and give additional tzedaka on Chof Av in honor of his father. The Rebbe also said that whoever gives tzedaka in honor of his father, Hashem will bless them "with His full, open, generous hand and many times over... five hundred times” (Sicha Chof Av 5739). As such, this is an appropriate time to make good on any pledges made to Tzemach Tzedek for Yom Tovim, Aliyahs, Kiddushim, Shul Lighting, etc.

Chabad of Chestnut Ridge at Nyack Street Fair

Yesterday, Sunday, Chabad of Chestnut Ridge, led by Rabbi Chaim Zvi (Tzili) & Chaya Ehrenreich, had a booth, under the scorching sun, at the Nyack Street Fair on Main Street in Nyack.

Hundreds of people stopped by the Chabad booth where over 25 people put on Tefilin, 60 neshek kits were distributed, more than 300 brochures about all mivtzoim were given out and many people asked to be notified of upcoming events at the Chabad Center.

Three people, including an 80 year old man, put on Tefilin for the first time in their lives – fully completing the celebration of their respective Bar Mitzvahs! When each one put one Tefilin there was singing and dancing “siman tov u'mazal tov” in the streets of Nyack. There was one frum bystander who was literally in tears of joy as he witnessed the amazing scene.

Many children also had the opportunity to do art projects about Yerushalayim and Eretz Yisroel.

Special thanks goes to the bochurim, Adam Epstein, Mechi Gancz and Binyamin Kroker for helping out all day with tremendous Chayus and devotion.

Camp Fund Garage Sale Update

Boruch Hashem we have received quite a number of items already for the upcoming garage sale to benefit the camp scholarship fund for Monsey Chabad children.

In addition, please call or email if you can volunteer your time next week to catalog and label prices. We also need volunteers on the Sunday of the actual garage sale to help man tables. We are splitting it into 2 hour blocks of time and anyone who can offer to man it for some period of time would be greatly appreciated.

We are looking forward to a successful garage sale, on Sunday, August 1, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Beis Menachem, 360 Route 306.

Sponsor Uriel Ash's 135 Mile Bike Ride & Help Chai Lifeline

Dear Friend,

In a few short weeks, I will I"YH bike 135 miles from Lakewood NJ to Camp Simcha (together with other riders riding for Camp Simacha), an extraordinary overnight camp that gives children with cancer a vacation from illness that restores their spirits and renews their determination to fight illness. I'm writing to ask you to help sponsor my ride to raise money for this incredible camp and organization.

I am undertaking it to raise funds and awareness for Chai Lifeline, the international organization that provides year-round emotional, social, and financial support to more than 4,300 children and their families every year. Chai Lifeline's goal is to bring joy to children and hope to their families, enabling them to live full and happy lives despite the presence of illness.

Camp Simcha and its sister camp, Camp Simcha Special, are the organization's flagship programs. Every year these two camps offer 430 children a chance to forget about illness and just be kids again. (To learn more about Camp Simcha and Camp Simcha special, visit http://www.campsimcha.org. To learn more about all of Chai Lifeline's free programs and services, visit http://www.chailifeline.org.)

I will be biking to camp on Tuesday and Wednesday Aug. 3rd & 4th. My objective is to raise $3,600 by then and I hope you will help me reach this goal. All donations are 100% tax-deductible.

Please contribute, either by visiting my web page at the Go Mitzvah site http://www.gomitzvah.org/go/unmash or sending a check, made payable to Chai Lifeline, to me at:

96 East Willow Tree Rd
Spring Valley, NY 10977

If your company has a matching gift program, your gift may be doubled or tripled. If you send the paperwork to me with your check, Chai Lifeline will complete the form and send it to your employer.

Thank you for supporting me, and in doing so, helping children and their families cope with the diagnosis, treatment, and aftermath of serious pediatric illness.

Please feel free to forward this to anyone who might be interested in supporting Chai Lifeline.

Best Regards and THANK YOU for your support.

Farbrengen Tonight in Honor of AriZal's Yarzeit

There will be a farbrengen tonight, Thursday, July 15, following the 9:30 PM Maariv minyan at Tzemach Tzedek in honor of the AriZal's Yarzeit on the 5th day of Av.

Rabbi Isaac Luria Ashkenazi, known as Ari HaKadosh ("The Holy Lion") passed away on the 5th of Av of the year 5332 from creation (1572 CE). Born in Jerusalem in 1534, he spent many years in secluded study near Cairo, Egypt. In 1570 he settled in Sefad, where he lived for two years until his passing at age 38. During that brief period, the Ari revolutionized the study of Kabbalah, and came to be universally regarded as one of the most important figures in Jewish mysticism. It was he who proclaimed, "In these times, we are allowed and duty-bound to reveal this wisdom," opening the door to the integration of the teachings of Kabbalah - until then the province of a select few in each generation - into "mainstream" Judaism. - Source: Chabad.org

Ramapo on List of 2010 Best Places to Live in the USA

The town of Ramapo, New York, in which the hamlet of Monsey and the villages of Spring Valley, New Hempstead, Wesley Hills, Pomona and Airmont are located, was rated as the 88th Best Place to Live in the United States in 2010 by Money Magazine.

With a population of 116,000, including almost 300 Lubavitcher families, Money Magazine described the town as follows:

This quiet, safe suburb near the New York-New Jersey border is just 45 minutes from Manhattan, so it attracts many families with one or more parents who have jobs in the big city. There's lots to do in Ramapo, including golfing on an 18-hole public course, riding at its equestrian center, and kicking soccer balls at its recently built sport complex.

Incidentally, our dear neighboring Town of Clarkstown was rated the 41st Best Place to Live:

About a half hour from midtown Manhattan, Clarkstown offers an escape from the skyscrapers with a retreat into High Tor State Park. The park offers picnicking, swimming and picturesque hiking trails with views of the Hudson River. Not so into the outdoors? Clarkstown also offers a wide range of shopping from the Palisade Mall, Nanuet Mall, and the recent renovation of Main Street in each of the town's four hamlets. Clarkstown has also earned a reputation of being one of the safer cities in America.

'Roving Rabbis' Gather Wisdom

By Martin Bergman, The Journal News

Adam Epstein, 27, of Houston and Mechel Gancz, 22, of Airmont were standing outside David Panitz's house in Montebello on Friday morning, holding a box of freshly baked rugelach.

"We're going to teach Torah, and do a big mitzvah called 'tefillin,' " said Epstein, who, along with Gancz, is a rabbinical student at the Rabbinical College of America in Morristown, N.J.

"They wanted to stop by so I said, 'Great,' " said Panitz, who is family friends with Gancz and his father.

The two rabbinical students were visiting Panitz's home as a part of a monthlong stay in Suffern, during which they will meet with local Jews, discuss religious practices and exchange ideas about Judaism .

Epstein and Gancz are only two of hundreds of rabbinical students who will make similar trips during the summer to meet with Jews in every part of the world. The trips are a vital part of their training to become Chabad-Lubavitch rabbis.

Panitz jokingly referred to them as the "roving rabbis."

"Chabad International sends 400 students all over the world, to all sorts of areas," Epstein said. "A rabbi has many different roles, so meeting different types of Jewish people helps give me the experience to lead a community."

He added, "The main thing we're doing is engaging in a dialogue with Jewish people."

Chabad Lubavitch is a Hasidic Jewish movement, but as Chabad-Lubavitch rabbis, Esptein and Gancz will serve Jews of every sect and denomination.

On Friday, at the Panitz house, that dialogue started with a discussion of the week's Torah portion.

Before Panitz and Panitz's wife, Shirley, Epstein described the Torah portion, which told the story of a zealous Jew who took matters into his own hands when others strayed into immoral behavior.

Epstein explained how the story pertained to the relationship between the individual and the community in Jewish moral teaching.

"This story actually means something in our daily life," Epstein said.

Shirley Panitz agreed and said discussing the stories of the Torah was an integral part of Judaism .

"The study of Torah is the study of the meaning of the stories," she said.

The discussion then went to the topic of how to practice Judaism in a fast-paced, modern world.

Epstein and Gancz said that even the smallest, most mundane things — like the meals that are taken for granted every day — can be made holy with a simple blessing.

Epstein and Gancz applied tefillin — a small box containing passages from the Torah — to David Panitz by wrapping ceremonial black straps around his arm. Gancz said a blessing while Esptein attached the box and straps to Pantiz.

Ultimately, the visit was about strengthening ties between Jews whose religious practices sometimes vary. The rabbinical students had come to learn and discuss, not preach.

"We're not here to push an agenda," Epstein said.

"We try to find things we have in common," Gancz said.

Monsey Anash Gather for "Evening of Awareness"

Close to 250 men and women from the greater Monsey Chabad community, including numerous Shluchim and a contingent from Morristown, gathered in Monsey last night for “An Evening of Awareness” dedicated to making parents aware of the inherent dangers that come along with many technologies that our children may be exposed to.

The event, which took place at the Tzemach Tzedek shul, was sponsored by the three Chabad educational institutions in Monsey; Cheder Chabad of Monsey, Monsey Beis Chaya Mushka High School for Girls and Yeshivas Menachem Mendel Lubavitch of Monsey.

The evening began with a short video clip of the Rebbe speaking about the importance of strengthening the mitzvah of tznius especially during the summer season.

Following the video, Rabbi Yisroel Shusterman, Dean of Cheder Chabad, who acted as MC, introduced the Rav of Tzemach Tzedek, Rabbi Boruch D. Lesches, Rabbi Chaim D. Kagan, Dean of Monsey Beis Chaya Mushka and Rabbi Zalmen Leib Markowitz, a longtime leader in the Monsey community who also serves as an Educational Consultant for Merkos. All spoke inspiringly of the challenging but vital task of maintaining an environment of Kedusha at home and ensuring that our children receive the same consistent messages from both home and school.

The main speaker of the evening was Mr. Philip Rosenthal, a former Computer Forensic Investigator for the Rockland County Sherriff’s Department and world renowned expert on computer and internet safety.

Mr. Rosenthal gave a powerful 2 hour presentation highlighting the potential mental, physical and of course spiritual hazards that most computers and electronic toys, gadgets and phones have. His overall message included many tips on how to protect your children, and yourself, as much as possible through filters (i.e. k9webprotection.com) and monitoring software (i.e. eblaster.com) but most importantly by strengthening your relationship with your children. The presentation was followed by a question and answer session.

For a recent Mishpacha magazine article on Mr. Rosenthal please click here (PDF).

Thanks to Rabbi Kagan, Rabbi Wolowik and Mrs. Rosenbluh for organizing a truly inspiring event!

Thanks to Nechemia Kaplan for the pictures.
