Union Road Bridge to Finally Re-Open

SPRING VALLEY — After being closed at Morris Road for nearly two years, forcing traffic onto side streets, Union Road will soon be reopened with the installation of a temporary bridge.
Reopening the thoroughfare is targeted for mid-July, village and county officials said Monday. The road is blocked off in both directions at Morris because of the closed bridge.
The bridge is part of a multimillion-dollar drainage plan to end decades of flooding that has plagued residents along Stonehouse Drive, Morris Road and Francis Place.
The drainage plan, in the planning stages for years, is being done in three phases by the county and Spring Valley.
The Spring Valley Board of Trustees last week approved an $800,000 bond to finance drainage improvement work in the Stonehouse Drive area.
The work involves installing a new network of catch basins and modifying the storm-drain system.
The county's portion of what's called the Pascack Brook Improvement Project involves installing a new culvert and enclosing the brook to contain floodwaters.
The total project is expected to cost the county about $10.5 million, of which $7.8 million has been bonded.
The first order of business is opening Union Road. The bridge had deteriorated and needed to be closed.
Pilings have been installed as the county awaits the arrival of the temporary bridge from the Midwest, where it was constructed, county Highway Superintendent Charles "Skip" Vezzetti said.
Spring Valley Mayor Noramie Jasmin said that reopening the road is a major priority and that village officials worked with County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef, his administration and legislators to get it done. She set the reopening for mid-July.
The final drainage repairs will take longer. She said the $800,000 for the village's portion of the work would be bonded over 10 to 15 years.
She said the village still is looking to get money for the project from the federal government.
"People there deserve to live without flooding," Jasmin said.
The homes in the neighborhood were built on wetlands in the 1960s, and flooding has been a constant problem for more than 30 years. Part of the problem was because the bridge was obstructing the flow of the Pascack Brook.
Spring Valley and the county became partners in the project because the Pascack Brook is a county waterway, but the village maintains Union Road.
In 2003, the Union Road bridge was closed for eight months after it was deemed structurally unsafe, forcing cars to detour through the neighborhood's side streets.
Vanderhoef said a lot problems have delayed the drainage project and the replacement of the bridge. He said the contractor had difficulties with the temporary bridge.
Vezzetti also has said a county investigation found that flooding was occurring because the village under previous leadership didn't properly maintain its storm drains and pipes.
There also were delays as Spring Valley went to court to acquire the easements for the work.
Vezzetti and Vanderhoef said Verizon delayed the project by at least six months by failing to perform work on time.
"We've had construction problems and logistic problems," Vanderhoef said. "We've been frustrated along the way. We've pulled together with Spring Valley and others."
Jasmin praised the efforts of village Trustees Demeza Delhomme, Joseph Gross and Joseph Desmaret, as well as Vanderhoef, Legislature Chairwoman Harriet Cornell, Vice Chairman William Darden and Legislator Ilan Schoenberger.
"For decades, the residents of this neighborhood have received as many buckets of political promises as they had buckets of floodwater in their basements," Jasmin said.
"I promised action, and I am taking action. No more buckets filled with empty promises."

Monsey Yungeleit Achdus Camping Trip
At the Farbrengen one by one stories were shared, particularly personal stories of the Rebbe and personal stories of how some of those in attendance came to join Chabad and become Frum yidden. The stories were broken up by niggunim accompanied by Yitzy Goldsmith on the guitar until long into the night, before everyone rolled into their cabins, grabbed a few hours sleep and headed off to work early the following morning.
Yasher Koach to Shloime Litzman and Uriel Ash for all their hard work arranging the event.
Cheder 5th Graders Enjoy Liberty Science Museum
On the fourth floor the boys learnt about different forms of energy, and then went on a visit to Mars! On Mars they explored the best way to build a rocket, attempted to complete a conceptual task whilst spinning in a chair and explored using their hands in inflated astronaut gloves! In an exhibition entitled "How does it Work" they investigated, among much else, surface tension with lifting a giant bubble and climbed a fossil wall.
We had a light lunch and then continued exploring... going to an exhibit on infectious diseases we rode a mock subway to find out about how infectious diseases are spread, watched a video about cells and then explored various options of how to neutralise invasive germs including playing a great computer game where the boys destroyed the germs to watching all the stages of an operation on a very special patient... a banana!
As our grand finale we visited an exhibition called "Skyscrapers" seeing a remnant from the Twin Tower's high beams (which kids could walk across) and opportunities to investigate working with foundations, earthquake resistance and using a bulldozer.
A great time was had by all, thank you to Mrs. Meshchaninov, Mr Cohen. and Rabbi Gurgov for being great chaperones!

Cheder Chabad Holds First 8th Grade Boys Graduation!
Rabbi Wolowik welcomed everyone and introduced Mendel Jacobs, a talmid of 8th grade to act as MC. The MC called upon fellow talmidim Yechezkel Gross and Mendel Klein to recite the Rebbe’s and Rebetzin’s capitel tehillim.
The dean and founder of the Cheder, Rabbi Yisroel Shusterman was then called upon to read a letter of the Rebbe that was sent to graduates in 5761. He then translated the letter and shared a few emotional words of his feelings of seeing the first class of Cheder graduate.
The Moroh D’asrah of Kehilas Chabad in Monsey, Rabbi Boruch Lesches shared with the graduates some very warm and personal words on what is exoected from the talmidim as they grow up.
Mendel Krasnjanski recited a d’var Torah. Mendel Litzman represented the class in sharing what Cheder means to him and told a beautiful story about the Rebbe concerning the sensitivity the Rebbe had for the feelings of others and how we need to follow in the Rebbe’s footsteps. Noach Zeiler expressed gratitude to Cheder personnel on behalf of his class. The class then surprised their beloved Rebbe, Rabbi Yossi Soble with a gift that they bought for him for all his personal time that he invested in each talmid individually.
The Boy’s Principal, Rabbi Avrohom Wolowik and the General Studies Principal, Mrs. Simonne Nenner then distributed to all students the diplomas and a specially inscribed Tanya. A slideshow of pictures of previous years was created by Mendel Simon and showed during the event. It was a true inspirational and happy event. We wish the graduates much hatzlacha in all their endeavors!

Fourth Grade Boys Make Siyum

The boys really put themselves into the learning and by doing so have made great accomplishments throughout this year. Many boys have learned the משניות בעל פה. The class collectively has learned over 500 משניות בעל פה from the three מסכת!
While we were learning מסכת מגילה we got the new program called "משניות ברורות", which is part of "גמרא ברורה". For the last two פרקים of מסכת מגילה the boys were able to map out the משנה in a very clear way.
The boys have also accomplished a lot in learning חומש. Throughout the year we have learned 4 פרשיות with רש"י. We have just completed פרשת בא, and many boys are able to learn a רש"י even before it is taught!
The boys received certificates both for משניות and חומש. May the boys continue to learn תורה with lots of חיות and enjoyment and by doing so bring the coming of משיח right away.
A big thank you to the Groner family for hosting and sponsoring such a beautiful סיום.

Yud Beis Tammuz Farbrengen

Yud Beis Tammuz commemorates the birth date of the Freidirker Rebbe as well as the day that he was officially granted release from his sentence of exile to Kastroma in the interior of Russia. Twenty-seven days earlier, the Rebbe had been arrested by agents of the GPU and the Yevsektzia ("Jewish Section" of the Communist Party) for his activities to preserve Judaism throughout the Soviet empire and sentenced to death, G-d forbid. International pressure forced the Soviets to commute the sentence to exile and, subsequently, to release him completely. The actual release took place on Tammuz 13, and Tammuz 12-13 is celebrated as a "festival of liberation" by Chassidim.

Gimmel Tammuz at Cheder Chabad Boys
The atmosphere in חדר was one of excitement and inspiration! The מלמדים stayed in Cheder until 4:15 PM and made a wonderful program for this special day. At 2:00 pM all grades davened Mincha with the Minyan. It was beautiful to see 1st through 7th grade davening together with such חיות!
After מנחה, Rabbi Wolowik split the Cheder into four groups. Two groups stayed in the lunch room to play a jeopardy game with Rabbi Wiener, with questions about our Rebbe and his פעולות. One group went into the 2nd grade classroom, where Rabbi Goldberg farbrenged with the boys, said l’chaim and ate some nosh, told stories and sang ניגונים. The last group went to the 3rd grade classroom, where Rabbi Sirota said משניות with the boys and gave out raffle tickets. Rabbi Silber and Rabbi Wolowik made sure that all the classes were revolving between their places accordingly. After the groups had completed all the activities, the boys gathered in the lunch room for a general farbrengan and Rabbi Wolowik told a story and ניגונים were sung. There was a special raffle from Rabbi Sirota and the winner was Sholom Ber Winsbacher.
May all the boys take the חיות from ג תמוז and add in learning, davening and אהבת ישראל, and through this we will be זוכה to see our Rebbe once again with the גאולה!

Rockland County's Jewish Heroes
By Hema Easley, The Journal News
In his native Australia, Rabbi Dov Oliver and his American wife, Shevy, spent four years traveling in the Outback, reaching out to remote Jewish communities in sheep farms to spread the warmth and joy of Judaism.
In Rockland, the Jewish community may be larger, but the easy access hasn't dampened the Olivers' enthusiasm. As co-directors of Hillel of Rockland at Rockland Community College, the couple has been working with Jewish students to make the program the center of Jewish activity and identity.
In the three years the Olivers have been at RCC, the program has become more successful and its enrollment has doubled, they said.
"We are lucky to have a big and meaningful impact on the life of our students," said Dov Oliver, 31.
Their hard work and commitment was recognized this month, when the Jewish Federation of Rockland named the Olivers the winners of the Jewish Community Heroes project. The federation is the central planning, coordinating and fundraising body for local and international Jewish agencies, which supports many programs in the area.
"When I think of 'hero' I think of people who are saving the world or curing cancer," said Shevy Oliver, 29. "It's definitely an honor to be named that. I'm sure there are lots of people who deserve to be called Jewish heroes."
The Olivers were selected by online voters from a group of finalists that included Rabbi Chaim and Chaya Ehrenreich of the Chabad Jewish Education Center in Chestnut Ridge; Rabbi Shmuel and Devorah Gancz of the Chabad of Suffern; Brenda Lender, a longtime community volunteer with strong ties to Reuben Gittelman Hebrew Day School and JCC Rockland; and Sara Fuerst, who began Kosher Troops, a grassroots organization that sends kosher care packages to Jewish-American soldiers serving overseas.
"We were pleased that a representative from one of the Jewish Federation's beneficiaries won the contest," said Marla Cohen, director of marketing and public relations at the federation. "The Olivers ... have made Hillel a welcoming place for Jewish students irrespective of their level of involvement and wherever they are in their Jewish journey."
The Olivers engage students through celebrating Jewish festivals like Passover, Hanukkah and Purim, and through regular Torah studies programs. They also have social activities like kayaking, baseball games, arts and crafts that are open to all students, not just Jewish ones.
Every March, Hillel of Rockland celebrates Jewish Heritage Month with several activities. This year, it invited guest speakers, held a global Jewry fashion show, brought in Jewish comedians, offered Israeli dance classes, served kosher food, discussed volunteer opportunities and packed kosher food baskets to send to service members serving overseas.
The Olivers also act as mentors to students, offering guidance on relationships, entering the work force, getting financial independence, and walking them through a crisis of faith. They encourage students to maintain their Jewish identity and seek a partner within their community.
Their own youth and life experience — Shevy Oliver is an alumna of RCC — help them connect with students.
"This is a very impressionable and pivotal stage," Dov Oliver said. "We support and guide them towards a strong Jewish identity in the rat race. We also seek to provide them with a viable way to incorporate their religion and culture into their growth as adults."
Twice a year, Dov Oliver leads a group of Jewish students to Israel, seeking to connect with their roots. This first-hand experience of Israeli life also helps them defend Israel and its policies if it comes up in discussions.
The Olivers have announced they will use the $1,000 prize money from the Rockland Jewish Hero contest as seed money for the Rockland Hillel Scholars Fund, which will provide assistance to college students wishing to pursue Jewish studies at recognized institutions in Israel. They hope the community will contribute money to the defray the cost of airfare, living expenses and tuition for those students.

Massive Turnout for Rubashkin in Monsey

“There is no way to describe what we were feeling,” one attendee told Matzav.com in the wee hours of this morning following the event. “It was an incredible display of achdus, as thousands - Chassidim, Litvishe, bnei Torah, baalei batim, all types - gathered to give chizuk and get chizuk. What a gathering! What a display of unity.”
In addition to those who personally attended, a staggering 12,000 people listened to a live teleconference of the event on the Chazak Hotline, sponsored by the Chofetz Chaim Heritage Foundation. In fact, additional lines had to be set up at the last moment to handle the barrage of phone calls from people all over the world who wished to hear the speeches.
The event began at about 9:15 p.m. with Tehillim.
Speakers included Rav Menachem Meir Weissmandel, rov of Nitra in Monsey, former rav hamachshir at Agriprocessors, and a defense witness in the recent trial; Rabbi Yerachmiel Simins, noted attorney at law and legal advisor in the Rubashkin case; and Rabbi Pinchos Lipschutz, publisher of Yated Ne’eman and chief advocate in the Rubashkin case who has spearheaded the global effort to help Reb Sholom Mordechai.
Shortly after 11 p.m., following Rabbi Lipschutz’s speech, Mr. Mark Weinhardt, one of Sholom Mordechai’s defense attorneys in the state trial who made a special trip to New York to attend the event, was presented with an award for his efforts in this case as the crowd broke out into loud applause. The award was presented by Rabbi Lipschutz, who read the text of the plaque that was presented to an obviously touched and moved Mr. Weinhardt.
The highlight of the evening was clearly the presentation of Attorney Weinhardt, who shared some fascinating details of the Rubashkin case and his involvement. The tremendous crowd sat riveted as Weinhardt shared the ups and downs, and the frustrations and day-to-day challenges, experienced in the recent month-long state trial. He expressed his belief in the justice system, and said that just as justice was served in the state trial, he believes that, ultimately, justice will be served, perhaps via appeal, in the federal trial, with sentencing slated for June 22 by Judge Linda Reade.
Weinhardt’s speech was punctuated by numerous rounds of applause for Mr. Weinhardt himself, for his fellow lawyers and their families, and for all those who have given of themselves to ensure a proper defense.
Mr. Weinhardt concluded his speech at about 11:50 p.m. and was followed by the keynote speaker, Rav Shimon Zev Meisels, rov of Bais Medrash Beirach Moshe in Monroe, who delivered a drasha in Yiddish.
The final speaker was Reb Sholom Mordechai’s son, Reb Meir Simcha Rubashkin of Postville, Iowa, who shared some personal vignettes and the personal and familial trials and tribulations of the Rubashkin family during this ordeal. He mentioned how much the outpouring of support means to his father, and he highlighted the unprecedented achdus and care demonstrated by Klal Yisroel, calling the wider frum community “a family.”
The event concluded at 12:45 a.m. As attendees exited the hall, uplifted and inspired, volunteers collected donations to be used directly to assist the Rubashkin family and pay for the exorbitant legal costs of the defense and appeal.
Please continue to daven for Reb Sholom Mordechai ben Rivkah.
Significant funds must still be raised for the legal defense costs and the upcoming appeal. Anyone who can help out and lend support should take a moment to send a donation to the Pidyon Shvuyim Fund. The help of Yidden across the globe is severely needed.
