Last Chance for Cheder Matching Grant

Dear Anash,

We are pleased to report that the A&D and Y&R Matching Grant that was launched a few weeks ago has raised $60,460 in donations which generates $95,870 in matching funds. The total amount of donations and matching funds equals $156,330 to date!

This is amazing and we wish to thank all who have contributed. However, this is not enough! To keep the Cheder a viable school we need to raise more, and time is running out.

We are asking you, the members of Anash, to please do two things right now:

1. Send the attached letter (also posted at the bottom of this email so you can cut & paste it) to your family and friends - it is a plea to help the Cheder and contribute to the Matching Grant. Thank you for participating in this easy way and helping the Cheder!

2. Consider making a donation from $100 through $999, if you haven't already. Your donation will be matched dollar for dollar and the full amount donated to the Cheder. Better yet, donate $1,000 and the Cheder will receive $3,000! The Matching Grant goes through December 31st - so please take advantage of this great opportunity!

You can contribute via credit card by calling Cheder Chabad at 845-356-1213 extension 4 between the hours of 9:00 am and 5:30 pm.

Or simply mail a check to:

Cheder Chabad of Monsey
P.O. Box 1164
Monsey, New York 10952

Date your check December 31, 2010 to get a 2010 tax deduction.

Thank you for your efforts and your support.

Yisroel Schulman
President, Cheder Chabad of Monsey

The letter can be downloaded by clicking here and sent to family and friends or you can cut and paste it below and send it out.

By the Grace of G-d

As we rapidly approach the end of the 2010 tax year, we are writing to ask you to support Cheder Chabad of Monsey, an institution that educates more than three hundred Jewish children from pre-K through eighth grade.

Cheder Chabad of Monsey is founded upon the principles of Torah as seen through a Chassidic lens. Truly there is no other school like the Cheder in Monsey! Our strength lies in our connection to the Lubavitcher Rebbe and his profound insights into Torah and Jewish life. There is no other school in Monsey that embraces the use of computers and technology in the classroom to teach the most complex Rashis and Tosfos. Cheder Chabad does so because it wants to guarantee the mastery of the texts by each child, not just the top echelon of the class. Our beloved leader, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, taught that each child is precious and unique - and that we must strive to educate each and every child, no matter what.

While we are immensely proud of our educational environment and the solid learning that takes place in our classrooms, we face a staggering deficit and a litany of unpaid bills. We have cut our budget to the bare bones over the past six months to stay afloat, and, even so, we face a daunting task to catch up and stay current on the salaries owed to our devoted Rebbeim, teachers, and staff, as well as overhead and other operating expenses.

The number of children enrolled in Cheder Chabad is increasing every month as young families move into the community. In a number of years all of our classes will boast of 20 or more students, as those are the numbers in our lower grades. Until that time, we struggle to keep going with our upper grade classes having numbers of 10 to 15 students. These numbers fall short of generating sufficient funds to pay for the educational expenses of the class . . . and that is where you come in!

Would you please help us out with a year-end tax-deductible donation to Cheder Chabad of Monsey? As one program to raise funds we recently launched the Avraham & Devorah Hayman & Yisroel & Rivkah Schulman Matching Fund. For every amount you donate to the Matching Fund between now and December 31st, between $100 and $999, your donation will be matched dollar for dollar and the full amount donated to Cheder Chabad. For every amount you donate from $1,000 up to and including $2,000, your donation will be matched two dollars for every one dollar. For example, if you donate $100, Cheder Chabad will receive an additional $100 from the Matching Fund; if you donate $1,000, Cheder Chabad will receive $3,000; if you donate $2,000, Cheder Chabad will receive $6,000 ($4,000 of the $6,000 from the Matching Fund).

All of your donations are fully tax-deductible due to our long-time status as a bona fide 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. Simply date your check December 31, 2010 or earlier and mail it to us to get a tax deduction for 2010. Or you can call us with your credit card number on or before December 31, 2010.

You can contribute via credit card by calling Cheder Chabad at 845 356-1213 extension 4 between the hours of 9 am and 5:30 pm.

Or simply mail a check to:

Cheder Chabad of Monsey
P.O. Box 1164
Monsey, New York 10952

You will receive a letter from Cheder Chabad acknowledging your generous donation.

We thank you immensely for your support and would like to take this opportunity to bless you with all the blessings from aleph to tav. May your deeds of goodness and kindness be repaid many times over by the one who never forgets to repay . . .

With gratitude,

If you've already joined our matching grant campaign, we thank you and ask you to please consider sending this letter to family and friends to gain further support for Cheder Chabad of Monsey. One of them may be looking for a worthy tax-deductible recipient at this very moment!

Chof Daled Teves Farbrengen

There will be a farbrengen for men in honor of Chof Daled Teves at Tzemach Tzedek this Thursday night, December 30, following the 9:30 PM Maariv minyan.

The 24th of Teves is the day in 1812 that Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, the Alter Rebbe, was niftar. The Rebbe was in the village of Peyena, fleeing Napoleon's armies, which had swept through the Rebbe's hometown of Liadi three months earlier in their advance toward Moscow. He was in his 68th year at the time of his passing, and was succeeded by his son, Rabbi DovBer of Lubavitch.

Cheder Girls Visit Crown Heights

By Simcha Rochel Greenwald, Grade 7

This past Tuesday, three cars were filled with the lucky girls from the fourth to eighth grades of Cheder Chabad Girls who tried very hard and succeeded in memorizing the Tanya.

Upon arrival in Crown Heights we took a picture in front of 770 and then went into the Rebbe’s room where we said the Rebbe’s kapital and davened for anyone we wanted. We then went to 770 and had time to say some Tehillim. The girls were awed at seeing the table where the Rebbe would sit at farbrengen.

Then we all walked to the Rebbe’s library where we had an amazing tour. The oldest book they have is 534 years old!

For lunch, we all went to Kingston’s Pizza where we got as much pizza as we wanted, a large drink to share and ice cream! Thank you Mrs. Rosenbluh!

Thank you to our drivers Mrs. Klein, Mrs. Markowitz and Mrs. Marrus!

Cheder Students Enjoy Puppet Show

Cheder Chabad students in Preschool through 4th grade had the pleasure of watching puppet shows by Rabbi Yaakov Horowitz. One show was about not speaking Loshon Horah and the other one was about making ברכות. The smiles and participation of all the kinderlach really showed how much they enjoyed it.

Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Avraham Hayman for sponsoring this beautiful puppet show and enabling the children at Cheder Chabad to learn the valuable lesson of speaking only good things with our הייליגע mouth as can be seen from the following letter we received.

“Dear Morah,
When I reminded my daughter to make a ברכה on her cereal this morning. She answered “Of course I will remember I just saw a puppet show about ברכות.” Thank you Cheder Chabad for a wonderful and educational puppet show.”
-A grateful mommy

Chanukah at Cheder Chabad Girls

Chanuka was a week of activity and fun at Cheder Chabad Girls!

Our 1st and 2nd graders visited the Friedwald Nursing home where they sang for the residents and gave out Chanukah cards that they made themselves.

The 3rd grade girls enjoyed an afternoon of musical activities where they acted out Chanukah songs in groups for the rest of their class.

The 4th grades enjoyed a donut making activity. In addition, the 4th graders put together a dance by themselves and performed it for the elementary school at the Chanukah Chagiga.

Grade 5 performed a beautiful play, all in Yiddish, for the entire school. The play was written by their teacher Mrs Hendel. The girls acted beautifully and their costumes and props looked very professional.

Rabbi Lesches came to Cheder Chabad Girls school on Chanukah and gave out Chanukah gelt to all the students. It was very nice seeing the girls say a beautiful thank you to him as each one received their dollar.

The Chanukah Chagiga was a beautiful and exciting event. Our theme for the Chagiga was "crayoila" with many activities revolving around crayons and colors. We also played a grand "capture the oil" game. The school was divided into two teams and each team had to search for the other team's oil. The team that found it first won. Thanks to the 8th graders for organizing this fun-filled chagiga and the 7th graders for helping out.

What joy and happiness the boys in כתה א felt when they completed the first פרק of פרשת בראשית with Rabbi Rosenberg!

They learned all about the days of creation and what was created on each day. While learning the first פרק the boys learned many new words and שרשים. To make מעשה בראשית more real to the children, each boy chose a day of מעשה בראשית and made a project on it.

The boys from the younger classes came to see the beautiful projects and enjoyed listening to the 1st graders speak about their days of creation. Every boy in כתה א received a prize for working so hard on the projects. Two boys were chosen for creativity and picked out a prize from Rabbi Wiener’s שכר box. Cheder Seventh Grade Boys Talent Show

Chanukah at Cheder Chabad Boys

Since Rosh Chodesh Teves fell out during Chanukah and since there was no school on the closest Sunday to Rosh Chodesh, the PTA Sunday Rosh Chodesh Program for the boys Cheder took place on Tuesday and Wednesday, the sixth and seventh days of Chanukah.

Once again the boys were actively involved in skills they don't usually get to exercise. In the case of the older boys, baking, following recipes and creating great icing concoctions. For the younger boys, the kids had a wonderful time creating dreidels and making doughnuts.

A big thank you to Rabbi Shmuel Rimler and Mrs. Michal Rimler for organizing and orchestrating the doughnut bake for the older grades and to Mrs. Chaya Niasoff and Mrs. Dalia Cohen for organizing the program for the younger grades!

The fifth grade students provided great entertainment with an organized choir and talented soloists. We received much positive feedback, like smiles, applause and cheers.

Chabad JEC Celebrates Chanukah with Pearl River's Rotary Club

By Sam Schaeffer, New City Patch

Dozens gathered Tuesday evening at Braunsdorf Park in downtown Pearl River for the annual Chabad JEC public menorah lighting.

The 14-foot menorah has been lit for each night of Hanukkah to remind the community about Hanukkah and what it represents. The Chabad JEC, located in Chestnut Ridge, organizes the celebration in Pearl River, Piermont, Nyack and Chestnut Ridge.

Pearl River's celebration goes off with the help of Pearl River's Rotary Club. They were initially responsible for supplying the menorah, and now take charge of putting it up and taking it down.

Leading the lighting was Rabbi Ehrenreich of the Chabbad JEC and joining him was Rabbi Pernick of Pearl River's Beth Am Temple.

"It's a beautiful evening," said Ehrenreich. "It's always cold but the light of the menorah dispels all cold."

Ehrenreich opened the celebration by speaking about Hanukkah and this celebration in particular. Pernick then took over to lead the group in blessings. It was then time for the lighting of the candles, which he placed high atop the menorah from his precarious perch on a ladder to conclude the ceremony. Throughout the ceremony, hot cider and some treats were available to keep the cold at bay.

In addition to Ehrenreich and Pernick, braving the cold for the ceremony were members of Pearl River's Rotary Club, congregants of the Beth Am Temple and of the Chabad JEC, other residents, and local dignitaries.

Pamela Sitomer of Nanuet, deputy town clerk for Clarkstown, regularly comes to the lighting as a member of the Beth Am Temple. "[My family] always looks forward to this. It's a very nice evening, always very cold, but we keep each other warm," she said.

Also in attendance was former president of the Rotary Club, Jay Helman. Helman was responsible for providing the first menorah, which stood 9 feet tall. However, after it got knocked down three times, Helman said they couldn't repair it anymore, and so they had to get the money together for another one. After hearing about it, the community reached out and people pooled their money together to get the new menorah as it stands today.

"Lighting up our menorah teaches us that light wins over might," said Ehrenreich. "If we're ever in a tough spot and want to get out... bringing a little bit of light will help us."

Men and women are invited. It is imperative for as many people as possible to attend the dinner to show support and hakaras hatov to all the medical volunteers who will be attending.

There will be open seating and designated tables for people who daven at Tzemach Tzedek and Beis Menachem. The dinner is called for 5:30 PM and will end before 9:00 PM. Yehuda Green will be entertaining.

Bonei Olam was founded 10 years ago on the premise of providing financial support to Jewish couples faced with the trials of infertility. This organization is run by dedicated volunteers who give countless hours of their time in order to raise funds to ease the burden of childless couples.

In addition to standard and advanced fertility treatments, Bonei Olam is on the forefront of assisting pre- and post- cancer patients to preserve their chances of starting a family of their own. Bonei Olam guides women who are experiencing high-risk pregnancies, and recently they have become involved with genetics, thus helping countless couples with genetic diagnoses and treatments, enabling them to conceive healthy children.

Bonei Olam is an organization which has provided much dedication and support to our own Lubavitch community and to Shluchim worldwide.

Therefore, on behalf of the Lubavitch community of greater Monsey, we have agreed to be hosts at this year’s dinner.

Please click here for an ad blank to show your support for one or all of the dedicated volunteers and askanim who have invested so much time and effort to help Bonei Olam continue to be there for the Rockland County community, and for communities around the world. Please join us in supporting this vital mission.

We look forward to greeting you at the dinner personally.

Chanukah at RCC

A crowd of 70 people braved the freezing cold and strong winds to watch the grand menorah lighting which preceded the annual Chanukah party at RCC. Those in attendance included current and past students as well as professors, staff and both the Dean and President of RCC.

The menorah was recently upgraded and this year it stood proudly in a most central location, right in the middle of the college, standing an impressive twelve feet high. Moshe Reitman, who helped assemble and secure the menorah, was honored with the lighting in honor of his recent 60th birthday. The crowd listened to Rabbi Dov Oliver, director of the Center for Jewish Life at RCC, as he explained the story and significance of Chanukah and then joined in singing the Brochas and traditional Chanukah songs.

Following the lighting everyone went into the inviting warm building where they were treated to a dairy buffet dinner replete with all the delicious Chanukah repasts.

Entertainment was in the form of a magic show by Shloime Notik aka "the Magic of Solomon". Notik proved to be not only a great magic act but his antics and humor caused the crowd to repeatedly break out in raucous laughter as the joy of Chanukah was powerfully felt throughout the room.

Power of Jewish Children Competition

Hey Teves Farbrengen

There will be a farbrengen for men this Motzai Shabbos, Parshas Vayigash, at 9:00 PM at Tzemach Tzedek, in honor of Hey Teves.

On the 5th of Teves in 1987 the U.S. Federal Court issued a decision in favor of Agudas Chassidei regarding the ownership of the priceless library of the Frierdiker Rebbe. The ruling was based on the idea that a Rebbe is not a private individual but a communal figure synonymous with the body of Chassidim. The Rebbe urged that the occasion be marked with time devoted to the study of sefarim as well as the acquisition of new Torah books.

The Frierdiker Rebbe on Talking During Davening

Cheder Update & New Matching Grant

Dear Cheder Chabad of Monsey Family and Friends:

I would like to wish to each and all a Frielichin Chanukah! At this auspicious time related to chinuch, I want to give you with an in-depth report of my findings on recent site visits to our boys' and girls' Cheder. What I found was too much for me to keep to myself - please see below for my report.

In addition, I provide you in the report with an update on the Cheder's financial state and describe the efforts to remedy the situation.

As part of the overall plan that I hope and pray will pull the Cheder out of danger, I hereby announce the launch of a new matching fund - the first in over eight months - as one part of a program to ensure the Cheder's doors remain open.

Effective immediately through December 31st, you are invited to participate in the Avraham & Devorah [Hayman] & Yisroel & Rivkah [Schulman] Matching Fund.

For every amount you donate to the A & D and Y & R Matching Fund between now and December 31st, from $100 through $999, the amount will be matched dollar for dollar and the full amount donated to the Cheder. For every amount donated from $1,000 up to and including $2,000, the amount will be matched two dollars for every one dollar. For example, if you donate $100, the Cheder will receive an additional $100 from the A & D and Y & R Matching Fund; if you donate $1,000, the Cheder will receive $3,000; if you donate $2,000, the Cheder will receive $6,000 ($4,000 from the A & D and Y & R Matching Fund).

The idea and structure of this matching fund was developed by Avraham & Devorah Hayman in whose merit our community continues to grow and thrive. The A & D and Y & R Matching Fund is launched at this auspicious time when it is a Jewish custom of the highest order to give Chanukah gelt. All donations are tax deductible and it is our wish that your donation will positively affect your tax obligation while helping the Cheder.

All the best,
Yisroel Schulman
