Mumbai Attacks Remembered in Chestnut Ridge

CHESTNUT RIDGE — Rabbi Chaim Zvi Ehrenreich has been reaching out to fellow Jews in Rockland, urging them to appreciate their heritage and honor the memory of those lost in a terror attack in India a year ago.
Ehrenreich, who leads the Chabad Jewish Enrichment Center, said he believed that the killings of his counterpart in Mumbai, Rabbi Gavriel Noach Holtzberg, and his wife, Rivkah, should always be remembered.
Responding to Ehrenreich's call, more than 30 people Sunday afternoon filled the small sanctuary at the center on Whitefield Road to commemorate the ultimate sacrifice that the Holtzbergs made while serving Jews who lived in and visited Mumbai.
”We were looking for something to do in memory of the Holtzbergs. Something unique and everlasting,“ Ehrenreich said. ”We have to eternalize their memory.“
The Holtzbergs, who ran the Chabad House in Mumbai, were among the 166 people who were killed in November 2008.
In all, six people died at the Chabad House. The couple's infant child, Moshe, narrowly escaped the attack.
The Chestnut Ridge center was recently renovated, and Ehrenreich decided to rededicate the center in memory of the Holtzbergs. A mezuzah was installed and a memorial plaque with the couple's names was unveiled during the ceremony.
Ehrenreich told the audience that the challenge the Holtzbergs faced in Mumbai should be duplicated in other parts of the world.
”What's special about Israel? It's a holy place. Being there, we have an opportunity to be holy ourselves. ... But being outside of it and making that place holy, that is really facing the challenge,“ Ehrenreich said.
Ehrenreich said although he had never met the Holtzbergs, he spoke with Gavriel Noach Holtzberg on the phone once on behalf of an American visitor who lost his luggage in India.
”It was in the middle of the night, and the line was very difficult to get through,“ Ehrenreich said. ”But he got back to me, and he helped out.“
Julie Schwartz, who was visiting her parents, Robert and Barbara Soltz of Chestnut Ridge, from Israel, was among the participants in the memorial.
Schwartz said she got the rabbi's message.
”Acts of terror will not stop Jewish people from reaching out to other Jews to support their spiritual enrichment,“ Schwartz said.
Marty Kossover of Nanuet said the commemoration event gave him an opportunity to think about the incident in Mumbai.
”We somehow have to make sense of their sacrifice, what it really meant,“ Kossover said.
The ceremony was followed by the showing of a live webcast titled ”Mumbai Memorial Tribute,“ sponsored by Chabad's Rohr Jewish Learning Institute. The one-hour program included remarks by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as well as the chief rabbis of Israel, Yona Metzger and Shlomo Amar.

Chestnut Ridge Memorial on Sunday for Mumbai Terror Victims

CHESTNUT RIDGE — As Americans gathered around their Thanksgiving tables last year, Mumbai was under siege and on fire. This Sunday, the 166 people who lost their lives and scores more who sustained injury will be honored.
Globally, the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute will broadcast a live Mumbai Memorial Tribute. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Nobel laureate author Elie Wiesel and both chief rabbis of Israel will be on hand to say a few words.
In Chestnut Ridge, Rabbi Chaim Ehrenreich of the Chabad Jewish Enrichment Center will hold a tribute to Rabbi Gabi and Rivky Holzberg, the directors of the Chabad House in Mumbai who, along with four of their guests, were killed during the attacks.
He will also live-stream the global memorial and show a short film titled “Lamplighters,” which documents Chabad-Lubavitch’s 70 years of world outreach.
“They were obviously very special people even before their passing,” Ehrenreich said of the Holzbergs. “The Chabad Jewish center was targeted for its religious affiliation and international appeal.”
As part of the event, Ehrenreich will dedicate a plaque in memory of the Holzbergs. The Chestnut Ridge Chabad is also in the process of dedicating an ark, a place in the house of worship where Torah scrolls are kept. During services, the holy ark is the central focal point of the synagogue.
On Wednesday, Pakistan charged seven men in connection with the terrorist attacks. The indictments came on the eve of the first anniversary of the attacks, which targeted a train station, hotels and other spots in the Indian financial center.
The citywide attacks halted a peace process between the nuclear-armed India and Pakistan. India says Pakistan must tighten its control of militants before the two countries can resume talks.
“All the accused categorically told the court they were innocent, and the charges leveled against them are not supported by the evidence,” defense lawyer Shahbaz Rajput said after the court adjourned until Dec. 5. If convicted, the men, who allegedly belong to the Lashkar-e-Taiba militant group, could face the death penalty.

Central Community Yud Tes Kislev Farbrengen

On the 19th of Kislev of the year 5559 (1798), the Alter Rebbe, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, was released from his imprisonment in the Peter-Paul fortress in Petersburg, where he was held for 53 days on charges that his teachings threatened the imperial authority of the Czar. More than a personal liberation, this was a watershed event in the history of Chassidism heralding a new era in the revelation of the "inner soul" of Torah, and is celebrated to this day as "The Rosh Hashanah of Chassidism". Chassidim joyfully celebrate this day with farbrengens and an increased commitment to the ways and teachings of Chassidism. Tachnun is not said and we begin anew the yearly cycle of the daily study of the Tanya, Rabbi Schneur Zalman's major Chassidic work as part of the Chitas daily study program.

No Left Turn Into Wesley Plaza Shopping Center

Vehicles traveling North on Route 306 (from Grandview Avenue towards Willow Tree Road) will no longer be allowed to make a left turn into the first South entrance (opposite Village Green). To enter the shopping center, northbound vehicles need to proceed to the second main entrance that faces the bank.
This change was recommended by the New York State Department of Transportation as a result of numerous accidents and near misses with cars coming out of Village Green.
Please note that the Ramapo Police Department has been ticketing cars that make the now illegal left turn into the wrong entrance.
