Cheder Chabad Science Fair

By Mrs. Chaya Webb
I was asked by Mrs Shusterman to be one of several people from the community to be a judge for the Cheder Chabad student science fair. One can only imagine my enthusiasm at the prospect of doing this Thursday night less than two weeks before Pesach, but in retroscpect that is just what I feel.

All the girls were delightful and the projects were amazing. All the students were standing proudly by their displays. Only grades 5,6, and 8 were judged by us.

The girls I spoke to were excited and fluent as each described what she was demonstrating and what had been learned from the experience. Many worked in pairs, and it was obvious that they were really partners in the project. Each expressed hakaras hatov for the encouragement received from Mr Bloch, their teacher, as well as to others who had helped.

From sight influencing taste, isolating iron in cereal, to how ice melts and much much more, it was wonderful to experience the excitement the students and their projects generated in the room. All the judges agreed that this was a very impressive evening.

Chabad of Suffern Six-Week JLI Course a Big Hit

For the last six Wednesdays, Chabad of Suffern had the pleasure of presenting the JLI course, You Be the Judge II.
Real cases that were brought before Beit Din were deliberated civilly, in our courtroom setting at Ramapo Town Court, by State Supreme Court Justices, County and City Judges, as well as a District Attorney, while our esteemed Rabbis Ganczs presented the Jewish Law.

The success of this course was proven by the number of participants who eagerly signed up for the classes. Over 80 of them were attorneys, the majority of those Jewish. As the result of the involvement of so many Jewish attorneys, we are now looking at the possibility of establishing a Jewish Legal Society.

None of this would have been possible had it not been for the kindness and generosity of Dr. Alex Poltorak. In the merit of his father, Judge Reb Avraham Shamshon Kleynerman A"H., Mr. Poltorak graciously provided the funding for Chabad of Suffern to offer this JLI course. Dr. Poltorak’s father, Judge Kleynerman would be especially moved by this event as in Judge Kleynerman’s world, living in Russia, he would never have had the opportunity to combine the learning of Torah Law and Civil Law. Thanks to his son, Alex, in Judge Kleynerman’s merit, he has been a vital part in making this all possible for so many.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe said years ago that we would see this very thing happening in the Soviet Union, where Civil Law and Jewish Law would in fact be deliberated together. We have been fortunate in having seen it happening in our own midst.

We would like to thank Yisroel Schulman for all of the time and energy he invested in this program. His advice was invaluable and organizing the program for attorneys could not have been accomplished without him.

Letter From Yisroel Schulman

Dear Friends,

As the chair of our three educational institutions (Cheder Chabad, Yeshivas Menachem Mendel and Monsey Beis Chaya Mushka), I wish to publically thank Avraham Hayman for his extreme generosity in launching the Matching and Double Matching Campaigns.

In the past 48 hours, over $250,000 has been raised. While impressive, much more money still needs to be raised to ensure the survival of the institutions.

On behalf of the three mosdos, yasher koach to everyone that participated until now. Due to the great response, the matching fund programs will end today (midnight tonight) for the Yeshiva and Monsey Beis Chaya Mushka.

The programs will continue for Cheder Chabad until this Shabbos. If you wish to make a pledge to the Yeshiva, please do so today by emailing ymmlofmonsey@gmail.com.

If you wish to make a pledge to Monsey Bais Chaya Mushka, please do so today by emailing cdkagan@aol.com.

If you wish to make a pledge to the Cheder, please do so this week by emailing gsandler@chedermonsey.org.

Again, our deepest appreciation to Avraham and to all of the participants.

Amazing Matching Grant Opportunity to Help Our Community Mosdos!

In honor of his 50th birthday and first wedding anniversary Reb Avraham Hayman has generously contributed $1,800 to 13 of the local Monsey Chabad Mosdos.

In addition, Reb Avraham will be providing matching grants to the 3 primary Chabad educational institutions in Monsey. All are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this unique opportunity to help these Mosdos, which are the lifeblood of our community, especially during these difficult economic times.

The following are letters from the heads of each institution which include the exact details of the matching grant offer:

This past Shabbos, Avraham Hayman announced at his birthday Farbrengen a special fund raising project in honor of his 50th Yom Holedes. To help Cheder Chabad of Monsey, he will for this week only (March 15-20) any money pledged to this Moisad. Up to $999 he will match one-for-one and any amount $1,000 or more he will match with an extra $2,000!

The amount pledged can be paid out until June 30, 2009 but either postdated checks or credit cards must be submitted this week.

In this special time between Purim and Pesach, the Rebbe emphasized so often the special importance of supporting Chinuch, especially in these difficult days and when children play such an important role to hasten Moshiach’s arrival. What a golden opportunity to participate - where your every dollar is worth double or triple!

All donations are tax deductible. Please make your check(s) payable to Cheder Chabad of Monsey - one of the pillars of the Monsey Chabad community and a flourishing institution, but under the stress of today’s economic times. Please call 845 356 1213 or 845 201 0203 to give your credit card information or email yshusterman@chedermonsey.org.

Please include your mother’s name – to be sent to the Ohel and for the announcement each day in the Cheder of the names of the people having the z’chus of supporting that day’s learning. In the z’chus of your Tzedoka, as the Rebbe always emphasized, may we see the ultimate Geulah and the Rebbe B’rosheinu!

Rabbi Yisroel Shusterman

Reb Avraham Hayman, in honor of his 50th birthday, has offered to assist the Yeshiva in raising much needed funds in these trying economic times.
For any donations of $1.00 to $499.00, Reb Avraham will match the contribution dollar for dollar. So a $250 charitable contribution to the Yeshiva becomes $500.
For any donations of $500 or over, Reb Avraham will give the Yeshiva a set amount of $1000. So a $500 charitable contribution to the Yeshiva becomes $1500.
While pledges have to be made at this time, they can be paid anytime up to July 15th.

So we are asking those that can, to please indicate your pledge by emailing the Yeshiva at ymmlofmonsey@gmail.com.

With deep appreciation to Reb Avraham and to all those responding to this appeal,

Rabbi Mendel Polter

Monsey Beis Chaya Mushka has been given a unique opportunity to raise badly needed funds. On Shabbos, our dear supporter, Reb Avraham Hayman, announced the following matching program for Monsey Beis Chaya Mushka:

For the next 6 days any money pledged will be matched as detailed below:
$1-$499 – donations will be matched $ for $ (donation will be doubled!)
$500 and up – an additional $1,000 will be added to the donation!
Donate $300 – MBCM will receive $600!
Donate $500 – MBCM will receive $1,500!
Donate $700 – MBCM will receive $1,700!

Donation can be paid out in a maximum of 4 payments to be completed by July 15 2009. All payment information (checks, head checks, credit cards) must be received during these next 3 days. Anything received later, will not qualify for this offer.

Please do all you can so that our school can maximize this wonderful opportunity.

All donations are greatly appreciated and in their merit, may you be bentched with all brochos for Gezunt, Parnasa and Nachas.
To make a pledge, please contact me at cdkagan@aol.com or 845-538-7484.

Rockland First Responder Communication System Fund Grows

By midhudsonnews.com

NEW CITY – Funding to build a Rockland County Public Safety Communications System grew Friday as Senator Charles Schumer and Representative Nita Lowey announced a $250,000 grant for the system. That is on top of $550,000 Lowey previously secured and $600,000 in another federal grant already delivered to Rockland for the program that will connect police, fire and EMTs on an interoperable radio system.

Schumer noted the importance of such a system, saying its necessity was proven during the September 11 attacks when the various emergency services agencies in New York City were unable to communicate with one another.

“It is essential that our first responders be able to effectively community with each other in everyday work and during emergencies,” the senator said.

County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef said that every dollar received “will be used to keep our residents safe.”
