Hey Teves is celebrated as a day of rejoicing in Lubavitch since on this date in 1987 the U.S. Federal Court issued a decision in favor of Agudas Chassidei Chabad regarding the ownership of the priceless library of the 6th Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson. The ruling was based on the idea that a Rebbe is not a private individual but a communal figure synonymous with the body of Chassidim. The Rebbe (Rabbi Yoseph Yitzchak's son-in-law and successor) urged that the occasion be marked with time devoted to Torah study as well as the acquisition of new seforim.

Suffern Chabad Holding 'Hanukkah Wonderland' All Week

By Ben Rubin, The Journal News
The Ganczs, a young couple running the Chabad of Suffern, have dreamed since last year of creating a weeklong Hanukkah celebration for local Jewish families.

They succeeded this year, converting a closed-down Hollywood Video in Airmont into what they billed as Rockland's first "Hanukkah Wonderland," which will be open every day this week.

Replacing racks and racks of videos, they filled the large storefront with crafts tables, a press where children can make olive oil and a toddler play area.

In the back of the store, they used video display racks to partition off a movie room, where Hanukkah videos play on a projection screen. In the center is a "Hanukkah time machine," a large enclosed space that tells the holiday's Biblical story to a soundtrack.

"This year, it's a mega-Hanukkah house that includes activities for all ages of kids," Shmuel Gancz said at the location yesterday.

The Ganczs held their first Hanukkah event last year, leasing the Lower Hudson Valley Challenger Learning Center for a day and bringing out about 250 people, Devorah Gancz said.

But, they wanted to do something much bigger this year. Troast Realty Services, of New Jersey, agreed to donate the Hollywood Video store, which closed a year ago, for the week and the Ganczs commissioned the help of friends and community members to renovate the space for the holiday.

"We had 10 to 15 people from our community coming to help Saturday night," Shmuel Gancz said. "It was a miracle that it worked out."

Now, the store has a large inflatable menorah - which is a ceremonial candelabrum - out front, balloons, music, an inflatable moonwalk and crafts stations to paint cookies, dip candles and write Hanukkah cards.

During the afternoon yesterday, Debbie Hirsch came in with her 6-year-old, Brandon, to check out the activities. Within a few minutes, her son was making a sand-art menorah with the help of Alona Aharonov, a local Chabad high school student helping run the crafts tables.

"We came last year and he loved it, so he wanted to come back," Hirsch, from Suffern, said. "I think it's nice that they have something like this for the kids."

Local children will help build a 12-foot-tall menorah out of Legos all week, culminating in the Chabad holding a special candle-lighting ceremony with it on Sunday, the last night of Hanukkah. There will also be a special challah-making event at the store Friday, just before Sabbath.

"I think this is a really nice thing that they're doing," said Shaina Silberstein, 17, another student/volunteer from Monsey Beis Chaya Mushka high school. "They're working really hard to make Hanukkah special for others."

Shmuel Gancz said he hopes to build on this year's work to continue bringing the Hanukkah event in the future.

"We hope to continue every year," wherever a storefront is available, he said. "It's not just a one-time thing."

The Chabad of Suffern's "Hanukkah Wonderland," at 213 Route 59 in Airmont, costs $6 per child and will be open during the following hours:
Today: Noon-6 p.m.
Wednesday: 10:30 a.m.-6 p.m.
Thursday: 10:30 a.m.-6 p.m.
Friday: 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
Saturday: 6-8 p.m.
Sunday: 10:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m.

19 Kislev Farbrengen with R' Yoel Kahn at Heichal Menachem of Monsey

Chabad of Suffern Presents Chanukah Wonderland

19 Kislev at Cheder Chabad Boys

Cheder Chabad Boys School celebrated Yud Tes Kislev in a very unique manner. The children started the activities in the lunchroom where they were told that the entire Cheder would be divided in to 7 teams. In the spirit of Hakhel and Achdus each team consisted of students representing every grade of the Cheder. Once the teams were divided, each team had to visit every classroom where the Rebbi of that grade told them part of the story of Yud Tes Kislev. After all of the teams went to every classroom they returned to the lunchroom where they were tested on their knowledge of the story. The team that had the best participation and knowledge won the competition. Each member of the winning team will receive a 4X6 picture of the Rebbe. It was so nice to see how excited the children were to learn all of the facts surrounding Yud Tes Kislev. We also utilized this gathering to present the prizes to the winners of the Chof Cheshvan Rally. The activities continued at a farbrengen during lunchtime. A fleishig Yom Tov meal was served; including shvartze kashe and a special dessert. A very special yasher koach to the shluchim at Yeshivas Menachem Mendel for organizing this event.

Rockland Receives $1 Million Grant for Terrorism Preparedness Efforts

From MidHudson News
Rockland County has been awarded over $1 million from the State Homeland Security Program to support preparedness efforts in the event of terrorist attacks. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency provides the funding.

The Rockland County Sheriff’s Department submitted an application for funding in October.

The Sheriff’s Department, Office of Fire & Emergency Services, Health Department and EMS will utilize the funds. Twenty-five-percent of the total grant will be used by law enforcement agencies in the county.

The grant will support planning, training and exercises associated with preparedness and prevention activities in the case of a terrorist event. Funds will also cover personal protective equipment for law enforcement agencies, along with reimbursement for holding training sessions.

"The continued vigilance against terrorist attacks is a must,” said Sheriff James Kralik. “The best way to be vigilant is to work in total cooperation with all law enforcement agencies in Rockland County to ensure success."

“Preparedness is key to effective response to emergency events. We, as a county, continue to hold training sessions and drills so we are prepared in the case of any emergency situation. This grant will help us be vigilant and ready to protect our residents against any type of terrorist threat,” said County Executive C. Large Turnout at Monsey Mumbai Memorial

A large crowd of men and women gathered at K’hal Tzemach Tzedek Lubavitch of Monsey on Tuesday night in memory of the Shluchim Rabbi and Rebbetzin Gavriel and Rivki Holtzberg H”YD and the other Kedoshim who perished in Mumbai, India.

The evening, which was emceed by shul President Yisroel Schulman, began with the recitation of Tehillim led by the Director of Cheder Chabad of Monsey, Rabbi Yisroel Shusterman. Rabbi Simcha Werner, Director of NCFJE of Rockland, followed with opening remarks.

Reb Yeruchem Cohen, a businessman who has been to the Holtzbergs’ on numerous occasions, shared some personal experiences he had with the Shluchim and of the deep respect that he had for them. He told of the time an Israeli mother contacted Rabbi Holtzberg to track down her son who was lying sick in a hospital in India. After hours of calling hospital after hospital Gavriel finally tracked him down to a hospital in a small village a few hours away from Mumbai. Gavriel immediately traveled to the hospital where he found the Israeli shivering on the floor in a corner without even a blanket covering him. Gavriel grabbed him, put him in a car and brought him to Mumbai, where using his connections, he was able to get him into the best hospital in the city. There it was determined that the Israeli had a severe life threatening illness for which it would take weeks to recover. Gavriel literally saved his life! Reb Yeruchem pointed out this was only one instance of thousands of how Gavriel and Rivki helped Yidden.

The crowd then watched the moving new video by JEM after which a few niggunim were sung. This was followed by Divrei Chizuk by Rav Boruch D. Lesches, the Rav of the Kehilla. The evening concluded with Rabbi Zalmen Leib Markowitz encouraging all to increase in learning, davening and mivtzoim as per the Rebbe’s directives following other tragedies.

A video of the evening will be posted shortly. Thanks to Zevi Schulman for the pictures.

Cheder Chabad Celebrates Yud Kislev

This past Sunday, Yud Kislev, the Cheder Chabad Boys School organized a farbrengen for grades 5 through 7. The farbrengen began with Rabbi Wolowik explaining to the students how the Miteller Rebbe read Tehillim Perek 55 on the day that he was redeemed. This Perek includes the Pesukim of the famous nigun Podoh B'Shlom. After singing the nigun, Rabbi Wolowik and Rabbi Shusterman farbrenged with the children, said l'chaim (on grape juice) and had some farbaisen (cupcakes). The farbrengen concluded with the children singing the Miteller Rebbe's Kapelya. It was so nice to see how well the children knew the nigunim.

Grades 1 through 5 had a separate assembly where the boys said the twelve pesukim, sang Podoh B’Sholom, heard some stories about Yud Kislev, said l’chaim and enjoyed a cupcake.

Beis Menachem Hachnosas Sefer Torah

More than 150 people joined K’hal Beis Menachem and Reb Avrohom Birenbaum yesterday as he dedicated a Sefer Torah to the Shul in memory of his late wife Mrs. Malkie Birenbaum A"H. The proceedings began at the Gewirtzman home on the corner of Grandview and Route 306 with a large number of people who had purchased letters in the Torah filling them in together with the Sofer. Many of the crowd had driven from Brooklyn to be part of the simcha. A number of distinguished local Rabbonim partook in the writing and the parade that followed afterwards along Route 306 to the Torah's new home in Beis Menachem.

The dancing and hakofos were very lively with everyone feeling what a truly meaningful Simcha this was. After Mincha, a Seudas Mitzvah was served where Rabbi Kagan spoke about the significance of the wording not to forget Toiras Imecha, the Torah of your mother, and that this is connected with the role of the Jewish woman in holding up the Torah which Mrs. Birenbaum was known for, both holding up the Torah personally as well as teaching it to others.

It was a most beautiful event and Beis Menachem thanks all those who braved the cold and took part.
