Town Aims to Ease Maple Ave. Congestion

By James Walsh, The Journal News
A rebuilding of one of the busiest traffic spots in Ramapo is likely to be completed by spring or early summer.

Known around Town Hall as the Maple Avenue Reconstruction Project, the plan aims to address traffic congestion, and at times competition, between drivers and pedestrians.

The area, because of its largely ultra-Orthodox Jewish population, is by its nature a walking community. People walk to local yeshivas and synagogues. They walk to shops along routes 306 and 59.

Many residents also drive, joining motorists from other locales at what's essentially a crossroads to New Jersey, Spring Valley and western Ramapo. Continue article here.

Annual Chicken Ritual Starts in Monsey

By Jane Lerner, The Journal News
Many Jewish residents will gather in a school parking lot this week to take part in an annual ritual that dates at least to 800 A.D.

The kapparot ceremony, in which a chicken is held over a person's head and moved in a circle three times before the bird is slaughtered, is for many an integral and deeply moving part of the introspection that takes place in the days before Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.

The ceremony was first mentioned in Jewish writings as early as 800 A.D.

The controversy over the ritual also is old. As early as the 1400s, Jewish authorities opposed the ceremony, maintaining that it was a pagan rite that had mistakenly made its way into Jewish custom. Click here to continue article.

Rockland County Taxes Likely to Increase

By Laura Incalcaterra, The Journal News
Buyouts and the bailout could determine whether Rockland County property owners have to dig significantly deeper into their pockets to pay their 2009 county tax bills.

Even with beefed-up cost-saving measures already in place to address the struggling economy, elected officials said yesterday that 2009 would mean an increase in property taxes.

"We're going to have to turn to the public and everybody is going to have to take a hit," County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef said. Click here to continue article.

Chabad of Suffern Puts Focus on Fun

By Ben Rubin, The Journal News
In front of an excited group of 22 elementary school children, Rabbi Moshe Grossbaum theatrically revealed a Texas longhorn's horn from a slender cardboard box.

He then pulled out a deer horn, a long spiralling ram horn, an antelope horn and other big and very small horns during a lesson on what a shofar can and cannot be made of.

In an effort to counter the traditional belief that nobody actually enjoys Hebrew school, Rabbi Shmuel Gancz and his wife, Devorah, sought to put a twist on the traditional model with the Chabad of Suffern's newly created Hebrew school.

"For too many kids growing up in America, Hebrew school is their only Jewish experience," Shmuel Gancz said. Click here to continue article.
